The Energy Management Technology group was created to leverage technology advancements that make it possible to create a unified approach to lowering the campus carbon footprint while maintaining the existing high standards for comfort and safety. A central database is updated every 30 seconds with tens of thousands of pieces of information; from how many central chillers are running, to how much domestic water is being used in almost every building. This database forms the core of an analytical program that runs the plants and buildings at peak efficiency twenty-four hours a day. Cutting edge, special purpose microprocessors are used to interface the 24 legacy control systems into a single, web accessible system. These microprocessors allow us to take advantage of modern technology now, while providing an upgrade path to the future in our plants and older campus buildings. The data is also fed into a statistical analysis engine that models the performance of our large equipment and gives us an early warning when a device is in need of service. This same tool will ensure that energy efficiency projects stay energy efficient over the years to come. The field technicians are now using tablet computers to enhance their productivity.
