Things Maintenance Personnel/ Contractors Working in BuildingS Need to Know

What to do if the fire alarm is activated

Don't Panic!

Calmly leave the building and wait outside until UAPD or Fire Safety informs you it is safe to return.   Employees remaining in a building after the fire alarm has activated, may be fined or be subject to disciplinary action. Contractors remaining in a building after the fire alarm has activated, may be fined or removed from the University of Arizona campus either temporarily or permanently.

The most common worker fire alarms are:

Changing air handler filters

Sweeping or dusting

Welding

Burnishing

Drilling

Getting fire alarm equipment wet

Smoking in the buildings

Accessing the ceilings (in buildings with beam detectors)

What are beam detectors and dectection cameras?

Beam detectors and detection cameras are devices that detect smoke and fire similar to a smoke detector. Unlike a smoke detector these devices detect smoke and fire by monitoring an entire area (example a hallway or a room). This can cause false alarm by people entering the ceiling, or by doing hot work, even if no device can be seen in the area. A complete list of buildings with beam detectors and detection cameras can be found at the link below.
