The Executive Director, Facilities Management Operations oversees routine and special event operational efforts that contribute to the cleanliness, hygiene, and aesthetics of the University:
- Special events supported include Homecoming, Family Weekend, Arizona Bowl, all athletic events, Tucson Festival of Books, and all other interior and exterior campus events.
- The Custodial Shop routinely performs Healthy High-Performance Cleaning of indoor spaces of all campus buildings (except residence halls) including restrooms, classrooms, common areas, laboratories, locker rooms, museum space, clinics, gymnasiums, and office spaces. They also do periodic project work including hard floor care, professional carpet cleaning, and wet cleaning of sidewalks. They also support special events on campus by cleaning interior spaces.
- Various disciplines within the Grounds Services Shop clean and maintain campus landscape and hardscape on a routine basis and in support of exterior special events.
- Groundskeepers maintain the landscape and hardscape around buildings, parking lots, and exterior malls and other open spaces maintaining campus aesthetics and landscape safety by trimming overgrown shrubs, dry-cleaning hardscape, and pruning trees to maintain seven-foot clearance beneath them. Twice each year they replace plants in 14 flower beds across campus with seasonally appropriate plants. They also perform small-scale landscape renovation projects to improve plant care, conserve water, facilitate maintenance, and enhance campus aesthetics.
- Arborists maintain over 5,000 campus trees, performing routine pruning, and repair or replacement of trees damaged by storms or other causes. Using their high lift equipment they also support campus marketing efforts by installing and replacing banners across the campus.
- Irrigators maintain plant health by installing, operating, adjusting, and maintaining campus irrigation systems to ensure all landscapes on campus receive appropriate watering based upon plant types and growth stage and seasonal needs. They manage 88 irrigation controllers across campus to regulate and monitor application rates
- Spray technicians contribute to plant health by applying effective and environmentally appropriate nutrients, weed control, and pest control
- Turf Specialists maintain all natural and artificial turf on campus and off campus athletic fields and lawns, including 25 acres of campus lawns, 14 acres of Power 4 Conference athletic fields, and 7 acres of recreational space. Routine maintenance includes mowing, fertilizing, weeding, and line-trimming. Seasonally, they transition turf areas to enhance turf health and appearance and to repair damage from foot and vehicular traffic or parking
- The Waste and Recycle Management Shop supports campus departments with office move outs and confidential recycle containers. They remove trash and recyclable materials using 13 compactors, 45 frontload trash and recycling containers, and 120 exterior trash containers. They provide and service waste/recycle containers for renovation projects, and support landscapers and arborists with green waste services for campus. They currently divert 50.2% of recyclables from the landfill.
- The Masons Shop constructs, repairs, replaces, and maintains streets, sidewalks, pavers, and other campus hardscapes to support campus safety and aesthetics. They also construct, repair and maintain campus masonry elements, including benches, building exteriors, sidewalks, ADA ramps, and brick/block/rock/concrete walls.
